Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams are both respected paint manufacturers with decades of development behind them. If a skilled painter applies a quality product from either brand correctly, the result will look good.

The differences between them, at the premium tier, are real but subtle. Tinting accuracy, sheen consistency, how the paint flows off a sprayer. These things matter to professionals. For most homeowners, the brand itself is less important than the product line chosen within that brand and the quality of the application.

So the question is not which brand is better in the abstract. The question is which product performs specifically in Hawaii's conditions, applied correctly by someone who knows what they are doing.

Why Hawaii's Climate Changes the Equation

Oahu's climate is harder on exterior paint than most mainland conditions. High humidity, intense UV exposure, salt air near the coast, and heavy tropical rain create a cycle that exposes weaknesses in lower-grade paint quickly.

Mold and mildew are a constant concern. UV rays break down paint binders faster here than in drier climates. Salt air is corrosive and works against the paint film. And the frequent rainfall means moisture is finding every gap it can.

It resists mold and mildew, holds color under UV exposure longer than standard acrylic formulas, and applies at the film thickness that makes a paint job last. It also performs reliably even when painting in humid conditions, which matters in Hawaii where weather windows can be short.

A note on application: The product is only part of the equation. We apply Emerald Rain Refresh using professional spray equipment, which builds the correct film thickness from the first coat. Benjamin Moore makes excellent paint. Their Aura line is well-regarded among professionals, and their color accuracy and tinting system are strong. We are not here to knock the brand.

Our choice comes down to two things. First, Sherwin-Williams has a specific product built for the conditions we work in every day. Second, consistency matters in professional painting. When our team knows exactly how a product behaves on every surface type and in every weather condition, the results are more predictable. Switching brands introduces variables we do not need.

What You Should Ask Any Painter

When you are getting quotes for an exterior paint job in Hawaii, ask the painter what product they plan to use and why. A painter who cannot answer that question specifically is worth a second look.
